Marcel Duchamp's  Fountain (1917):
Duchamp began making ‘readymades’ in 1914, claiming any “ordinary object [could be] elevated to the dignity of a work of art by the mere choice of an artist.” Early readymades included a bottle rack, snow shovel, and comb.
Fountain is a urinal, purchased from a hardware store on 5th avenue, placed on its side, and signed ‘R. Mutt, 1917.’ Duchamp submitted Fountain to an exhibition organized by the New York Society of Independent Artists under the pseudonym Richard Mutt. The work was included in the show, but placed behind a wall and essentially hidden from view. After the exhibition, Duchamp brought the work to Alfred Stieglitz, who photographed it for the Dada journal The Blind Man. The journal defended the piece, claiming the artist had “created a new thought for that object.” The rest as they say, is (art) history…
